Osteopathy and other systems of manual medicine have developed a variety of models to understand the mechanisms of movements (correct and incorrect) of the musculoskeletal system. In the Introduction it is stated that the relationship between the structure and function of internal organs is at least as strong as that between the constituents of the musculoskeletal system; and that, as with the musculoskeletal system, visceral manipulation can be used to treat internal organ dysfunction.
To this end, Jean-Pierre Barral, DO and Pierre Mercier, DO have developed an innovative foundation of concepts and techniques based on extensive clinical experience and research. In the first chapter the authors explain the precepts, theories and studies that led them towards this unique treatment system. Subsequent chapters outline the physiognomy and internal anatomy of the viscera: the liver, the stomach, the large and small intestine, the kidneys, the bladder, and the female reproductive system. Indications for evaluating specific organs and manipulation techniques are illustrated and described in detail.
